Violin Bowing Mechanism

The three violins and revolving horsehair bow located in the top of the restored Phonoliszt-Violina.

Violins and Bowing Mechanism in the Hupfeld Model B Phonoliszt-Violina. The left violin plays the "D" string, the center one plays the "A" string, while the right violin plays only the "E" string.

The violins rotate outward into the rotating horsehair bow by pivoting on a pin, which is located at the center of each violin's scroll (at the end of the fingerboard). The speed of the circular bow and the degree of pressure against the violins is adjustable, and is controlled by expression perforations in the music roll.
