Interior View of the Philipps Pianella Modell 40 Orchestrion

Interior view of the upper portion of the Philipps Model 40 Pianella.

The Pianella's two ranks of wooden violin and violoncello pipes are clearly visible at upper rear. The metal flute / piccolo pipes are in front of the two wooden pipe ranks. The reiterating (tremolo) xylophone is at the front, just behind the lighting effects for the animated scene. Only a portion of the lighting effect mechanisms are shown (the part the provides a motion effect to the waterfall part of the scene), as the cumbersome metal "sunset" effect portion was removed for this photograph, in order to allow the musical components behind it to be clearly visible.

The squarish framework located just above the roll changer (in the center of the picture) is part of the lighting effect mechanism for the animated scene. Between the upper and lower wooden rollers is a continuous "mesh-like" cloth belt, which is dabbed with numerous randomly spaced splotches of opaque black pigment. When the belt moves, electric lights inside the belt loop project a rippling light effect onto the back side of the waterfall portion of the scene, providing a sense of the water flowing downward.
