Piano Attachments: __________ Mandolin/Banjo attachment. The banjo attachment common on Nelson-Wiggen pianos consists of a rail with dangling flexible strips normally made of bellows-cloth, with tapered wooden blocks glued to the lower end. This wooden block produces a banjo like sound when it strikes the piano strings. In contrast, the typical mandolin attachment is similarly constructed, except that the dangling leather or bellows-cloth strips have a metal tab or narrow hollow brass rod at the lower end, which produces a more metallic tone on impact with the piano strings and that is reminiscent of a mandolin. Piano hammer date: __________ Many Nelson-Wiggen pianos have a rubber-stamped date (i.e. JUN 6, 1922) on the underside of the piano hammers, usually in the tenor or mid-treble area. Finding this date may require very careful inspection due to a poor initial impression or aging of the imprinting ink. Please make note of this date when replacing an original set of hammers, as in most cases it provides the only clue to the actual age of the piano.
