The Johann Daniel Philipps began his career building automatic musical instruments at the age of 23, when he built a barrel orchestrion for the Germania Hotel and Dance Hall in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. In 1877 the firm of Philipps and Ketterer was established, a relationship that lasted nine years. In 1886 The Frankfurt Orchestrion and Piano Instrument Factory--J.D. Philipps--was formed, and during at least part of the 1880s and through the 1890s the company occupied the building complex shown above. |
