Ruby (Larsh) Raney, while on the Raney's honeymoon trip, standing in front of the Virginia Hotel, Long Beach, California, September 1914. The Virginia Hotel was located on the south side of Ocean Boulevard at Magnolia, and opened on April 1, 1908, and was reportedly the social center of the area for many years. It was originally named the Bixby Hotel, but it was renamed the Virginia Hotel after a construction accident in 1906 resulted in fatalities. The hotel building was demolished after the March 10, 1933, Long Beach earthquake.

“Gobby” was an endearment given to A.C. Raney by his first grandchild, Jeannie (the daughter of Cliff Raney, Jr.). All the grandkids called A.C. Raney "Gobby," pronounced gawb-by.
