Coin-Chute with Slug Detector
and Coin Accumulator
Mechanism

Close-up of the PianOrchestra;s coin chute and accumulator mechanism.

Early model PianOrchestra styles did not have coin accumulator mechanisms, but merely a simple mercury-pot type switch that was tripped electrically by means of a remote wall box, and was either on or off. In later machines, where Wurlitzer built the furniture cases, a coin accumulator device was installed, which could total up to twenty or more coins, and then play back an equal number of tunes.

In the top portion of the coin-chute leading into the accumulator, the permanent horseshoe magnate is used to eject slugs, which is followed by a vertical slot backed by a delicate flat metal spring that causes undersized coins to be ejected into a small pan.

The accumulator's ratchet wheel credits or debits up to approximately twenty coins. The pair of electrical magnates are used to trip the mechanism by remote, battery powered, wall boxes.
